Мангостин /Garcinia mangostana/

Легенда твърди, че мангостинът, чиeто родно място е Малайзийския архипелаг, е пратен на хората като скъп дар от Буда. Този плод е уникален по рода си и често е наричан „кралицата на плодовете“, заради своите огромни здравословни ползи. Той съдържа мощни антиоксидантни хранителни фитовещества, най-важни от които са ксантоните – наскоро открит клас полифенолни съединения. Те се срещат рядко в природата, като по-голяма част от тях се съдържат в представители само на две растителни семейства. Факта, който прави мангостина толкова уникален е, че от кората му са изолирани 56 от общо 200 познати на света ксантона. От тях най-разпространени и най-изучавани са: α-mangostin, β-mangostin, γ-mangostin, garcinone E, gartanin, mangostenol, mangostenone A, mangostenone B, trapezifolixanthone и tovophyllin B.

Ксантоните се смятат за едно от най-големите открития, свързани със здравето на човека. Докато повечето хора знаят за ползите от витамин С и Е и ги приемат профилактично или по време и след боледуване, много по-малко от тях са наясно с мощните антиоксидантни свойства на ксантоните. Те са естествени химични вещества от групата на полифенолите /химични съединения с три фенолни пръстена/, които са силно реактивоспособни. Ксантоните в мангостина се смятат за универсален лек, защото повлияват клетъчните механизми.

Редица изследвания са показали значителните биологични свойства, притежаващи ксантоните, като най-значими са антиоксидантните, антитуморните, противовъзпалителните, антиконвулсивните, антиалергичните, антибактериалните, противогъбичните и антивирусните. В последните години задълбочено се анализират потенциалните химиопрофилактични и химиотерапевтични свойства на ксантоните и те са подробно изследвани поради техния инхибиращ ефект върху всяка стъпка в процеса на канцерогенеза. Тези съединения са способни да инхибират няколко молекулни мишени в туморните клетки, включващи кинази, циклооксигенази, рибонуклеотид редуктазата и ДНК полимерази. Антитуморната дейност на ксантоните включва задържане на клетъчния цикъл, потискане на пролиферацията на туморни клетки, индуциране на апоптоза и диференциация, намаляване на възпаление и инхибиране на адхезията, инвазия и метастази.

В качеството си на мощен антиоксидант, ксантоните подпомагат защитата на организма от вредното въздействие на свободните радикали, могат да забавят появата на признаците на остаряване на организма и играят важна роля в енергийния метаболизъм. Също така допринасят и за нормалното формиране на колагена, като по този начин поддържат в добро състояние кръвоносните съдове, костите, хрущялите, зъбите, венците и кожата.

Оксидативният стрес, неблагоприятните условия на живот и ежедневните вредни навици са основни фактори, водещи до заболявания като диабет, артрити, рак, болести на черния дроб и стомашно-чревния тракт. През последните години, антиоксидантите, особено тези с растителен произход, са били предложени като възможни средства за превенция и лечение на такива заболявания.

Ксантоните модулират и балансират ендокринната система, като благоприятно повлияват баланса на хормони и други неврохимикали, произвеждани от ендокринната система. Ксантоните поддържат нормалната функция на щитовидната жлеза, като оказват благоприятен ефект при болестта на Хашимото. Ксантоните повлияват и инсулиновата резистентност, нормализират нивата на кръвната захар. Те способстват за намаляване на отлагането на телесни мазнини, като балансират нивата на кортизола – стероиден хормон, отговорен за справянето със стреса, повишения апетит, желанието за сладко и образуването на мастни депа.

Освен ксантони, екстрактът от мангостин съдържа и други мощни антиоксиданти, като елагинова киселина и катехини. Елагиновата киселина инхибира действието на химикалите, предизвикващи мутации и израждане на клетки и бактерии. Тя предотвратява свързването на канцерогенни вещества с ДНК и така неутрализира канцерогените в тялото и възпрепятства деленето на раковите клетки. Елагиновата киселина се препоръчва за хора, подложени на химиотерапия, тъй като има силно имуномодулиращо и имуностимулиращо действие и помага на организма да се справи със страничните ефекти от процедурите.
